Volume 5 Issue 6 - June 2009

Welcome to DestinationGreen!

June is here and so is the summer heat. To risk an awful pun, "hot" is also how I would describe the Green Cleaning movement. Progress can be seen from the local level to the legislative table, as more states and city districts adopt Green Cleaning policies for schools, public buildings, and community business centers.

But with all the interest and excitement we continue to keep our eye out for the battle against Greenwashing. The debate is now in full swing on how to effectively certify claims of a "green" product and changes may be in coming.

Also in this issue we have included an excellent article along with the entire PowerPoint presentation recently given by the CEO of Office Depot at the National Summit on Sustainable Business Solutions. And please take a look at our Video Spotlight which highlights just how quickly things are changing - you won’t want to miss either of these.

As a reminder, the nominations for the 2009 Green Cleaning Award for Schools and Universities is now in full swing. Applications are now available online. Please see the news item below for a link to the application form, nomination guidelines, and more detailed information on the award itself. We’d sure like to see you among this year’s winners!

This month’s Green Selling Tip focuses on "Continuous Knowledge Improvement" to help guide you as your customers and potential clients seek sustainable practices within their business operations. And finally we have an excellent Expert Insight with David Holly, Chancellor of Green Cleaning University who provides a candid look at the history of the program and the excitement surrounding the recent partnership of Green Cleaning University with ISSA.

I hope you all enjoy the issue, stay cool, and keep up the great work.

Green Selling Tip: Continuous Knowledge Improvement
Jeff Pease, Director of Distributor Programs

greenselltip

The term "consultative selling" was first coined by New York Times bestselling author, Linda Richardson. This sales approach emphasizes customer needs and meeting those needs with solutions combining products, services and knowledge.

Today, the term is a household word that distribution management is regularly touting as a type of selling they desire their sales force to adopt. While this is by no means a revolutionary approach, it is especially meaningful in our industry today as most organizations strive to implement sustainable practices – one of which is Green-Cleaning.

U.S. Green Product Council Debated

GS-37

Consumers can't be expected to verify the legitimacy of each and every green certification system, said Steve Odland, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Office Depot Inc., who spoke June 16 at the National Summit session on Sustainable Business Solutions in Detroit.

"Maybe it's time for a U.S. Green Product Council which could then take on the task of mapping all these various certifications," he said, according to the article (Additional article below).
